In November of 2023, I got the opportunity to design the Rulebook Covers for the 2024 season of the ARA Championships. The ARA, or American Rally Association, is a stage rallying sanctioning body that hosts rally racing events all over the United States. The championship features everyone from small, beginner, DIY rallying teams up to legends and professionals such as Travis Pastrana, Brandon Semenuk, and Ken Block. The only requirements for the 4 covers were that each of them needed the rulebook title, “2024” (which they already made), the ARA logo, and 1” of white space across the bottom for sponsor logos.
I specifically wanted my covers to have a classic, hand-made aesthetic. After half-toning the pictures and screening ARA’s Red on top of them, I manually traced around and painted in the cars in white by hand to make them stand out in the graphic. This process took a bit more time but was a lot more fun to do and gave me more hand-made imperfections that I was looking for. I wanted to seamlessly incorporate the 1” of white space across the bottom for sponsor logos. I did this by adding the page tear to the bottom, which adds to the hand-made, realistic look of the covers.
